Researchers in early childhood development tell us that
the value of music in a child's intellectual, physical,
emotional and spiritual growth is incalculable:

  • Music study increases a child's ability to build successful reading comprehension and language skills.
  • Music helps build math skills and the ability to manipulate symbols and remember patterns.
  • Music helps to build spatial reasoning skills, fine motor coordination, and the ability to imagine and create.
  • Music helps define an understanding of aesthetics such as beauty, order and harmony.
  • Music helps build perseverance, self-confidence and freedom to express oneself creatively.

But all these benefits are only possible if children find pleasure, satisfaction and joy in learning music and achieve the motivation to stay committed to the music learning process.

BUILDING ON CHILDREN'S NATURAL MUSICAL INSTINCTS:

Leading contemporary research in child development focuses on using children's innate musical instincts and natural delight in playing games to learn music skills.

Traditional private lessons emphasize guided instruction from expert teachers in the techniques required to play a musical instrument.

Dance and Sing With Me! FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC STUDENTS:
                                                       -- A Combined Approach --

Twenty-five years of music teaching experience with students from kindergarten ages through senior citizens and all levels of skills from beginner to hobbyists to music majors, has resulted in the Dance and Sing! Music approach to music learning which combines these two approaches to music study:
  • The intrinsic "discovery" approach of games and play
  • The extrinsic approach of guided expert instruction

This book shows you how using these same ideas in home music practice sessions and family fun activities can help your child learn delight and joy in making music, and can build their interest and commitment to musical success.

  • Create meaningful family music partnerships as you learn by playing together.
  • Learn songs and games to play together with your child.
